Seven-year-old, male titi monkey (species not designated)
Two weeks prior to presentation, the titi monkey was vaccinated with Vangaurd DM, a commercially available modified live vaccine containing canine distemper virus and measles virus. Initially, this titi monkey presented with a rash that was biopsies.
There is a generalized, multifocal to coalescing, red, scaly, slightly raised rash that affected much of the body. Rare pustules were also noted
Hair follicles in this skin section are multifocally necrotic and filled with neutrophils, small amounts of keratin and syncytia that contain up to 15 nuclei. Syncytia frequently contain intranuclear inclusions; rare intracytoplasmic inclusions are noted. Additionally, there is marked, segmental acanthosis, up to 4x the normal thickness.
None.
Haired skin: severe, acute, multifocal necrotizing folliculitis with syncytial cells and intranuclear and intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (consistent with Morbillivirus spp)
Haired skin: marked acanthosisHistologic findings are consistent with viral infection, most likely Morbillivirus spp., considering the clinical history. PCR and sequencing are currently in process to determine whether lesions are due to CDV or measles virus.
